Black Templars: Chaplin Grimaldus & Retinue Construction

At the start of the year I mentioned that I will be looking to start a Black Templars army. I remember painting Chaplin Grimaldus when he was very first released, and now that he has crossed the rubicon, I thought he would be the prime candidate to get my black armour technique sorted and to lead my force. Only got time today to get Grimaldus and his retinue assembled. Next up will be undercoating and getting the base layers on.

I have left the actual banner itself off to make it a bit easier to paint.

A while posting and looking forward to 2024

Well it has been a while posting real life has been limiting my hobby time.

But I have been collecting and researching my projects for 2024. In this post I will put a little detail in to what I aim to be focusing on in 2024.

1. Legions Imperialis

This was GW latest release into the Horus Heresy era with the core set bringing us both Space Marines and Solar Auxilia and the new frame for the Warhound. Once again it seems that the manufacturing side and promotion sides of Games Workshop do not communicate with each other fully. As the initial launch has sold through the base core items needed to build your armies. So hopefully this will not allow the release of the game to stall.

My focus from the starter set will be the Solar Auxilia and I have picked up a couple more box sets of infantry and Baneblades. My planes from Aeronautica will be used to fill out my army to hopefully hit the 3000 point mark. But we are still waiting for some of the core releases from the rulebook to be released. So hoping to see the Leman Russes, Malcadors, and Vanguard units released shortly. Or there are going to be some very very beige and boring army lists without the variation needed.

2. Black Templars

With the release of 10th Edition 40K, I have taken my time deciding what force to start with. Always had a hankering for the crusading forces of the Templars and also going to add in some Sisters of Battle as an allied force.

3. Star Wars

This project takes on many guises:

Role playing Game: I have started to run a Star Wars Campaign set just after the decree of Order 66. The group have a number of Jedi so they are currently focused on escaping the planet and ensuring that they lose the chasing Clone Troopers.

Within this project are a lot of 3d printed models done by my friends at 3D Kingdoms.

Legion: I have a only Ashoka, Clan Wren to finish my rebel army, then I will be working on my Empire force focused on the occupation of Jedha.

Shatterpoint: I have all the releases so far from Atomic Mass Games and will be using these figures to focus and improve my painting techniques. I am not sure if and when the group will play the game.

Armada: I think that this game may be dead in the eyes of Atomic Mass Games at the current time. So I will use this as time to paint up all the unpainted ships.

Games Expo Haul

Spent the weekend working at Games Expo this weekend and this was my haul from the show. I had planned on picking up Shatterpoint at some point but the deals at the show were to good to pass up on. I also got hold of the Padawam Ahsoka Tano as part of their promo release.
Then whilst chatting with an old work friend on the GW stand I noticed a last copy of Rogue Trader. Seeing that is where I started my hobby journey I thought I would pick up and have a pristine copy in my collection.

Work continues on my rebel troopers and Armada squadrons and follows will be following soon,

Was anyone else at Expo if so what was your haul?

Word Bearers Test Model Complete

Word Bearers Test Model Complete

I have completed my first test model for the Word Bearers. Yet to decide on wether to add decals or scripting to the model.

I probably will. so work now press ahead to get the first 10 models completed whilst I am working on them will also start the HQ model.

Aiming to have these completed by the end of January and hoping that no other distractions come into the frame.

Word Bearers New Year New Army Part 3

So my last post of the year before we welcome in 2020.

Been cracking on with the Word Bearers and have assembled all the models from the box set.

Some are in component parts to make it easier for painting.

Have to say I love the models for the Greater Possessed and the new Plastic Obliterators.

Also started work on my test colour scheme for the Chaos Marines. Nice a simple to start with Chaos Black then Leadbelcher for the metal and Khorne red for the armour. Bought together with a wash of Nuln Oil and then Agrax Earthshade. Aiming to have the first model completed before I go back to work. Not decided on the basing for the models yet.

Word Bearers New Year New Army Part 2

Word Bearers New Year New Army Part 2

Last night I had a quick read through the codex and delved into the Word Bearers section of the codex.

The Word Bearers have some nice special rules which I have listed below with some of my thoughts.

Legion Trait: Profane Zeal: You can re-roll failed Morale tests for units with this trait.

Will be handy when looking to hold onto objectives with smaller units and ensuring that they stay in battle longer than their opponents especially as the Chaos Marine Squads only have leadership 7 or 8 with a Champion.

Stratagem: Dark Pact use this when a World Bearers Character attempts to summon a unit of Daemons to the battlefield You can re-roll any of the dice used in the summoning roll, and your character will not suffer any mortal wounds for rolling doubles or triples. Costing 1 command point this will seriously be looked at if I decide to add a force of demons into my growing army.

Warlord Trait: The Voice of Lorgar this increases the range of any aura abilities on your Warlord's datasheet by 3 inches. To be honest this looks a given at the current stage of reading.

The lure of the models could not keep me away for long. Looking at the models in the box this is going to give me a Patrol Detachment which is a nice starting point to my army.

Army List:

Master of Possession 5 Power

10 Chaos Space Marines 8 Power

2 Greater Possessed 8 Power

2 Obliterators 12 Power

1 Venomcrawler 7 Power

Total Power 40 Power

So a nice little starting force that allows some nice flexibilty on the table and some stunning models to paint. Should be more than achievable in the time period.

Don't forget that if you are looking to take part that you can post your pics up on Instagram and Facebook with the hashtag  #PaintingWarhammer2020

Word Bearers New Year New Army

Word Bearers New Year New Army Part 1

Recently on Games Work Shop's Community Page they announced a new hobby challenge for us.

So with my Ultramarines hitting a good natural break, thought it is a pretty good time to add some bad guys to my collection. So where better to start with than Chaos Space Marines. In the past I have collected a Word Bearers force for Horus Heresy so having some investment in that background and lore I have decided to bring these up to date.

I popped down to Warhammer World today and picked up the codex and Start Collecting Chaos Space Marines starter set. With the focus of December and March for that to be the focus for the New Army that is where I will start.

Over the next few posts I will show my progress on the army and try and include as many test shots of my progress.

Who else is taking part?

DreadTober Failed

DreadTober Failed

Well I am gutted work progressed really well in the first 2 weeks getting most of the major work on the model completed. Then I was struck with tonsilities and then away for the week at the Essen Spiel. But I still remain motivated to finish up the dreadnought even if it is a couple of weeks late.

Will have completed shots hopefully by the end of next week.

DreadTober Part VI Blue is Complete

DreadTober Part VI Blue is Complete

Bit of a break last week as was ill with stupid Tonsilities, but back on with a few more layers to complete the blue. Now onto the black casing on the weapons and bringing some more life to the metal areas.

How is your DreadTober going?

DreadTober Part V Layering the Blue

With Vapian taking up the DreadTober Challenge with his Riptide we have decided the end of the month we will battle against each other to see who will come out on top. Having had a look at the Riptide stats I am not holding out to much hope.

Over the weekend and todays lunch break I have started the long blue layering process. It starts with leadbelcher and then ink washing with agrax and nuln oil, then a drybrush of leadbelcher and then finial highlights with Stormcast Silver. Then using the clear blue from the old Forge World paint range it is about 8 layers till I reach the deep blue that I am looking for. Once all the blue is done will be onto all the finer details of the model.

Dreadtober- Vapian’s take

Dreadtober- Vapian’s take

Being a long time Space Marine and Imperial Guard player, this summer with the release of the Contrast Paints from GW, I took the plunge and bought a Tau Army from scratch. This was only to have an excuse to use the Contrast Paints, on an army I had long wanted to get together and play for WH40K.

Never one to do it by halves, my rationale was to get everything i wanted in my army, in one jump; simultaneously hiding my purchases from the missus and also paint the army in a single hit.

So one big purchase later, which included the Start Collecting boxset (x2) and a tonne of pathfinders, crisis suits and the jewels in my gunline a Broadside and a Riptide, all I have to do is choose a colour scheme. But my lovely big models? These are huge models compared to anything I’ve painted for 40K before and lend themselves well to Dreadtober.

After a conversation with your regular host DibDab666, I was convinced to paint at least one of my Tau Dreadnaught sized models for Dreadtober, especially as my painting queue had stalled with Flames Of War projects, work, life in general and too many hours replaying Assassin’s Creed Odeyssey in September...

So this is my pledge. The Riptide will be up first (my rationale being if I get the biggest model out of the way first, hopefully medium and small models will follow a lot easier and almost appear done on their own) then everything else.

Also I have some Flames Of War Infantry begging me to get painted as well, so I will post regular updates on both projects. Then I can get back into the painting groove as Aeronautica Imperialis and my aforementioned Crimson Fists are also vying for space on the painting station. A hobbyists life is never completed!

DreadTober Post IV Posing Completed

DreadTober Post IV  Posing Completed

Another lunch time down and completed the posing and some of the work on the base. Happy with how it looks, worked on a fairly action based pose that will really stand out on the table. I am really pleased with how much pose ability this kit has as most of the shots I have seen have been fairly static. I have to be honest cannot wait to get this painted as tempted by a second one.

4 Shots of the pose below all the body, legs and arms are all separate for ease of painting. Can you guess what Netflix show I am watching?

DreadTober Part III Assembly and Pose Testing

DreadTober Part III Assembly and Pose Testing

So it's day one of Dread Tober and I have made some really good progress over lunch today, got the main body completed and got the legs done ready for posing.

Just simply assembled not chosen the weapon option just yet, and cannot decide if I am going to seal it or have it so that that it can open.

As I mentioned in yesterdays post ones of the challenges I was going to face was the basing as GDub do not produce the style I am using in such a large size. Hunting through my bases box found these steps left over from the 40K Heroes kit. The idea is to have the dread in a standing pose and his left arm pointing towards an unseen enemy.

Hopefully will have the basic assembly completed tomorrow and then can start to work on the painting.

DreadTober Part II Decision Made

DreadTober Part II Decision Made

With October approaching I have made my choice for DreadTober.

I have gone with the Primaris Redemptor as want to keep slowly growing my Ultramarines forces.

Challenges that I see with this project

  • Time: I am prepping for the Essen Spiel at work this month so my hobby time may well be limited. But I am planning to use my lunch breaks to give me some more time.
      • Basing: GW does not have a style of base that fits the Redemptor I am either going to have to base it in similar style to the Big G, or look to try and build my own base that will fit with the theme that I have.
      • Posing, I like the model but not keen on the static pose that some put it in. Going to work on some dynamic posing on the model.
      • Weapon options: It comes with 2 weapon options, currently I am not sure of the role I want it to have on the table, so I might look to magnetise the weapons.
      • Ultramarines: What can I add to the model to so that it is more Ultramariney? I am no sculptor so I am gonna have to trawl through the bits box and see what parts I have that I can use.

Space Wolves: Primaris WIP

Well these have been sat on my back hobby desk for almost a year now. So with a break in the Ultramarines painting I thought I would finally finally get these finished. I was pretty much 80% of my way through them just really the finishing touches to add really.

After the break are the shots of where I am up to with them. I had previously completed the right shoulder pad, but was not happy with the freehand work, so I have taken them back down to the base red and will work them back up with iconography.

Ultramarines: Reiver Contrast Paints Gallery

Ultramarines: Reiver Contrast Paints Gallery

Last night thought I would have a play around with the new contrast paints. So painted up a complete model with some layer paints as well. Was quick and easy but the large flat areas do not really lend themselves to the contrast paints. Not going to paint my army using this method but was nice to knock a model out in one night just as a bit of fun.

Ultramarines Agressors Gallery

Yes Bank Holiday weekend was good to me in terms of painting time. So completed is my next unit for my Ultramarines, my Agressors with added DeathWatch armoured. So for now will be taking a break from my Ultramarines and focusing on my Adeptus Titanicus forces.

Adeptus Titanicus Cerastus Knight Gallery

With completing the Big G finally time to get back to AT, first knight completed is my Cerastus Knight, gone with a muted grey scheme and small spot lights of Orange. I have left the transfers off for now as I am trying to find some who can print out decals for my household. Up on the table is my next Knight,

Aeronaitica Imperialis Wings of Vengeance Preview

Well we had been waiting on this announcement for a while now ever since we saw some model shots earlier this year. To be honest I am surprised that this was not released later on this year, with the recent releases of Warcry and re-release of Kill Team, I thought that they might have given a bigger window to allow these games to bed in a little.

Going up on pre-order this weekend is the main box game Wings of Vengeance and a whole host of supporting products.

Check after the break for more images and my initial thoughts.

Ultramarines: Roboute Guilliman Finished

Finally Roboute Guilliman is table ready for battle.

I am pretty pleased with how the gloss blue armour has turned out on such a large model, all the armour edging and scrolls where a nightmare to paint and to ensure did not hit back over the blue, there were a couple of re-touching up that happened. I may well go back to the blade at some point. But I think I will practise this technique again on another blade.
