Heresy Thursday: Iron Warriors Upgrade Packs

So another Thursday sees another small sneek peek on the Warhammer Community page. Both Helmet and shoulder pad upgrade packs for the MKVI Armour. The heads look a useful addition to any bits box, but think I will be leaving the shoulder pads alone.

Following the current tread it looks like GW are doing a big release followed by a smaller release. So next week what will we get?

I am hoping that it will be a more detailed look at the leviathon.

Horus Heresy: The First Steps

With my much needed holiday over, it was back to good ol'Blighty from Greece, my extra wait to open up my Heresy Age of Darkness box set was not wasted. I did plenty of research reading other blogs and watching the community creators You Tube videos. In my head I had thought I had decided what my first steps were going to be, that was until I started opening all my pre-orders. I must admit the sheer amount of plastic in the box set I found intimidating. Normally with a new starter set there are 2 sides, bish bash bosh and the forces are assembled and you are gaming. Now with Age of Darkness things are not quite so simple....

Thankfully Andy a good friend of mine has picked up a starter set and has decided on Blood Angels as his force, so this made my decision making a little more easier. Reading through the rulebook it is very clear that you need a good amount of line troops to be able to take and hold objectives.

As I already have a painted Tactical squad of 10 with a Rhino. I decided that my first unit would be another Tactical squad and the Praetor with the axe. This would at least give me a legal starting point to the army and give me a little more time to decide on the rest of my list.

So as you can see in the picture the first squad and praetor are built and ready for undercoating. I am aiming to have this squad completed this week.

What progress have you made with your box set? and have you yet decided on your army list?

Heresy Thursday: New Plastic Contempor Dreadnought

With release of the Age of Darkness less than a week behind us most us have seen a different variant of the plastic Contemptor Dreadnought.  Today it was confirmed by Warhammer Community.

Sounds like a packed box, so for those you ike to magnitze your dreads this will give you the full load out available in the Liber books. I think for this is either gonna be a 2 or 4 box purchase, just need to work on my list. But seeing 4 Dreads stomping in fornt of a line of infantry I think would strike fear into most opponents.

  • One ultra-posable Contemptor Dreadnought chassis
  • Two heads, one of which can equip an optional helical targeting array
  • Four chestplate styles, with Loyalist and Traitor options
  • Two big old punchy hands, buildable as fists* or chainfists
  • Five different guns to go in those fists
  • Eight different arm-mounted guns, usable on the right or left side
  • A havoc missile launcher
  • Fetching shield and scroll details to smarten up your chassis

What weapon load out are you thinking for your first Dread? or are you going down the magnet route?

Siege of Terror: The Solar War

Second book of my holiday reads jumped to the start of the Siege of Terror with John French's The Solar War.

For those of us that have been reading and listening to every Black Library release for Horus Heresy it has been a long but suitably long time for it to reach its climax with the Siege of Terra. The Solar War is the first of what is a 5 part series so far. Can the Loyal Legions of the Emperor stop on the on rushing horde of the Warmaster Horus.

The book starts with the forces of the Emperor desperately preparing for the on rushing forces of the Warmaster, as the book unfolds it is a also a delaying tactic to allow the Ultramarines reach Terra and join the defence. Primarch Rogal Dorn has been given control of the defences of Terra which start at the first sphere at Pluto under the disgraced Sigismund, whilst Jubal Khan of the White Scars looks to intercept any secondary assualt.

Mersadie Oliton remembrancer to Horus before his fall from grace is given a message from an old friend to pass to Loken and escapes and avoids many pitfalls through the book.

With the every massing forces of the Warmaster both in space and the warp, how can the loyalists defend the throne of Terra?

For fans of the series you will know that it is customarry with grand operas the writers will focus on the lesser players and their perspective and view of the battle. The most interesting of these is Abaddon and his growing relationship with Chaos and his Mournival brothers. I found these parts of the book enthralling and complex and constantly looked to his next part in the battle. ( Yes I am a Sons of Horus fanboy)

This book is a grand space opera and John French manages to keep the action and battle flowing whilst giving more detail and richness to the characters that we have read through.

For those new to the Horus Heresy books this is not a starting point. You would benefit greatly from reading the first 5 books in the series. This book has wetted my appititie for what is to come in the Solar War.

What is on your reading list? and what did you think to the The Solar War?

Heresy Thursday: Dark Angels Upgrade Kits

Today's Heresy announcement feels a but light, but we have been spolied with some great new kits.

Available from Forge World soon are the Helmet and Shoulder Pad upgrade kits for Dark Angels.

Really like these and think that they could fit in welll with my planned Imperial Fists for more Templar style heads.

Know No Fear:The Battle of Calth Horus Heresy Book Review

On my holiday break I have taken a couple of Horus Heresy books for some motivational reading whislt I wait to get back to the UK and finally open my Horus Heresy Pre-Order.

Reader bewarned there are spoilers in this review......

Cover Description

Unaware of the wider Heresy and following the Warmaster's increasingly cryptic orders, Roboute Guilliman returns to Ultramar to muster his Legion for war against the Orks massing in the Veridia System, WIthout warning their supposed allies in the Word Bearers Legion launch a devastating invasion of Calth, scattering the Ultramarines' fleet and slaughtering all who stand in their way. This confirms the worst scenario Guilliman can imagine- Lorgar means to settle their bitter rivalry once and for all. As the traitors summon foul daemonic hosts and all the forces of Chaos, the Ultramarines are drawn into a grim and deadly struggle in which neither side can prevail.

This is the 19th book in the series and written by Dan Abnett and first published in 2012.

With there being over 80 books in the series so far there is a lot of reading material and some that just won't be to your taste or feature your Legion. It is generally a given that the first 5 books of the series are a must read as this covers the fall of Horus, the massicare at Istivan V, and the Loyalist fleeing the Traitors to try and get word back to Terra of the Warmasters betrayal.

For me personally this is one that should be added to the must read books as again it covers a major battle in the war at Calth and the rise of Daemons being used by the Word Bearers and their change from Marines to Daemon mutated. There are more insights into the mechanicum and the emergence of Samus. The Ultramarines come to realise that there is fear and they must master their fear to become victorius.

Dan Abnett once again blends the wonderful descriptive text that is a feature of his novels and the ability to convay huge battlescapes, fleet battles and then bring it down to singular combat and focus.

If you are an Ultramatines or Word Bearers player or fan then this is a must buy book.

Remember that when you have the chance to kill an Ultramarine do so or his revenge will be merciless

Horus Heresy: The Countdown begins

 The wait is almost over.......

“We do not need to be mighty when we are faced with weakness." - Ezekyle Abaddon”

Over a year since the first leak

4 Months since the trailer was released

2 Months of awesome Warhammer Community updates and creator blogs and You-Tube vidoes.

10 Days  until release......

Like many others I was up early last saturday and I queued for only 10 minutes, popped the core starter, both books, both weapon upgrade packs, and a Kratos tank. I left the rhino out as I had found one lurking in my box of shame.

It kinda looks like this but just swap the Rhino for the Loyalist book.

The worst part or best part is I away in Greece for our first holiday since Covid.

So for me it is 19 days and counting.

Preparing for the release I have the first 5 books of the Horus Heresy series downloaded on Audible.

I am sorely tempted I there are box sets left when I get back from holiday to pick up a second box,

My hobby progress has been pretty solid, my unit of Justarion Terminators are complete, the Mark III Sons of Horus are complete, and Rhino complete. I am trying to find some time before I go away to get some pics taken.
